Special engineering plastics is a new generation of high-performance polymer materials developed by the social needs of the arms race during the Cold War. It was called high-temperature polymer materials in the early days, and is now commonly referred to as special engineering plastics or high-performance polymers. The so-called special engineering plastics refers to a new type of high-performance polymer new materials developed after ordinary plastics and engineering plastics. It has many characteristics that other materials cannot have, such as high temperature resistance, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, Radiation resistance, high strength, high toughness, excellent electrical performance, good dimensional stability, etc., regardless of the national defense and military industry, aviation, aerospace, shipbuilding and other fields, it is also an indispensable and revolutionary material for the development of high-tech in the fields of electrical appliances, electronics/communications, automobiles, medical devices, petrochemicals and other military and civilian areas. From the advent of polyimide (PI) in the 1960 s to the commercialization of PEEK in the early 1980 s, the main varieties successfully developed and industrialized are: 1. polyimide (PI) ; 2. Polyamideimide (PAI) ; 3. Polyetherimide (PEI) ; 4. Polyarylate (U-polymer) ;5. Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) ; 6. Polysulfone (PSF) 7. Polyethersulfone (PES) ; 8. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), etc.
Regarding special engineering plastics, the main characteristics can be summarized as follows compared with other two types of materials: 1) physical properties: a. high heat resistance grade (generally defined as UL temperature index above 150C); B. high mechanical strength (generally 2~4 times that of general plastics); C. excellent comprehensive performance (such as radiation resistance, high temperature resistance and weather resistance). 2) processing technology: a. high processing temperature (generally 300 ~ 400C); B. high injection pressure (generally 120MPa ~ 160MPa is required); c.The mold must be heated (as opposed to the cooling of common plastics); d. Hot runners are preferred. High added value (generally between 1 and 100000 US dollars per ton, dozens of times that of general plastics). 4) The induction period of market development is long. 5) Most of the varieties are monopolized production and supply by several large companies.
The performance of special engineering plastics is more superior and unique, but it has not yet been mass-produced and its use is relatively narrow. These materials are mainly used in electronic appliances, automotive industry, military products and aerospace industries. After Europe and the United States and other countries have invested heavily in research and development, there are about dozens of varieties developed, but less than 10 are finally industrialized as materials. At present, the variety with wide application and large scale is polyphenylene sulfide. What needs to be pointed out in particular is that due to the special military background of such new materials, since their inception in the 1980 s, the West has listed them as strategic materials to block and embargo our country. But in recent years, the domestic demand for special engineering plastics has grown rapidly.
